The joined the NBA in 1970 as an expansion team. They struggled out of the gate, finishing 15-67 the worst league of their inaugural season. This team is slowly getting better over the years, become a winning team in the 1975-1976 season under coach Bill Fitch. They finished, the 49-33 record good enough for the division title and their first playoff appearance. They will advance to the Eastern Conference Finals, where they will be lost to the Boston Celtics last championship.

The Cavaliers spent the next two seasons as a semi-competitive team, making the playoffs both years. They will lose in the first round in each year. The next season, the Cavaliers went 30-52 in what will last with the team from Bill Fitch.

In 1980, a team of disaster in the form of a new owner Ted Stepien. Stepien involved with poor trading and players. Many trade that involved giving first-round draft picks. The NBA CREcreated rules that prohibit teams from trading draft picks in the first round of consecutive years in direct response to the damage done to the team Stepien.
